ok bought a sat nav of a friend and it doesnt come with the in-car adapter,i have a old one can i splice the wires and join em up

also the colour of the wiring is yellow,black
am i rite in thinking yellow=live
black=negative
dont wanna try it and kill the sat nav

any help would be great

 

normally yellow is live and black is neg yes, but would never want to guarantee it!!!

If you have an old adapter then easiest thing to do is take apart the cigerette lighter end and see where they terminate.

The wire that terminates on the tip (centre) is the live and as Chris said needs a fuse.

The one that terminates on the outside is the earth.

Bare in mind some of the newer systems actually charge the unit.. IE TOM TOM and they have 3 wires and you cant do what you want to do.
