Default Escort GTI..

...... Any good?

Looking to get ma Mrs a decent Escort and she likes the mk6 So was thinking along the lines of a GTI

She likes a bit go about her cars but nothing like an RS2K so thought the interior and the performance of a GTI would suit her.

So come on folks good points/bad points??

prices 1500 notes or there abouts ??

CheeRS!!!

They're an Si with a bit of a bodykit, half leather and about 2 or 3 groups higher insurance.

Same as any Escort though mate, not bad to drive, not particularly quick but handle quite well [all in comparison to other cars in the same price bracket]. They're 113 bhp [115PS is written on the cam cover].

They suffer from idling problems and rust mostly, both of which aren't expensive to fix And budget in a set of lower arms for every MOT

If she likes a bit of go, try finding a later XR3i with the 130 bhp engine or an Astra GSi for the same money

We got our GTI just over a year ago, and its been excellent

Never ever let us down, air con half leather power steering, u cant go wrong

we paid Ł1250 for ours with 6 months tax and a new mot, (bargin).

It just saved us using the cossie and the turbo for school runs etc, but tbh, i enjoy driving it that much im not that bothered about getting the RS out

Check for leaks in the boot below the lights and in the front footwells

Rust on the arches and lower doors

Rust on cills under the car

Lower arms become more of a problem when you fit bigger alloys and lower the car

When you open the doors just check for rust behind the seals thats a bad area

I have to sell my wife's 3/98 R Reg 1.8 LX with the 115 engine.
One owner from new, sailed through the MOT in March. 44k, alloys, aircon and sunroof. It's a 5dr in Cuirass Blue and completely as standard. Not taxed now but if you fancy seeing a clean car to compare a GTi to, and you are in the central belt, just let me know.

They're weak. They're not expensive or difficult to fix hence the crying smiley.

I'm not just going on the experience of having one of these. From the 20 or so I've had in the last couple of years [including a couple of GTI's] there's a running theme with repairs which are as stated in my first post: Idling problems [usualy potentiometer or ICV], rusty arches [sounds like a sexual thing ] and lower arms.

Even that Mk6 rs2k I was using needed them replacing and that was in great condition.

That doesn't detract from the fact I think Escorts are awesome value for money or I wouldn't continue to sell them.

The point I was making about insurance was that compared to an Si there's an unreasonable hike in Insurance groups [I've no idea and don't particularly care how this translates to peoples premiums as it doesn't effect me ].

Sassy, I'm sure you're a very competent driver for a girl.

Although that's not setting the bar very high.

I opt for any sex.

Sometimes inanimate objects too.

lol Yeah the fact it has those three little letters GTI after it makes the diff when it comes to insurance.
But insurance wouldnt be a problem as she has plent ncb 6 I think plus she's female (not being sexist) this always helps in bringing down the price for insurance.

Cheers for your comments tho guys and gals Im going to look at a few this weekend so see what happens.

Its a bday pressie for her so keeping it a suprise, hope I dont find one cos Ill need to be up at 6 am to wrap a ribbon and bow onto the fooker!

Oh what we do for out loved ones eh!!
