Default Best Clutch ?

just after opinions on whats the best clutch for a 1.6cvh rs turbo. i had a luk clutch in mine and it didnt slip, had to renew it though so put another luk clutch in and it does slip. flywheel face is fine, its definitely an rs turbo clutch, car is about 150bhp so dunno why it slips

anyway, id imagine a paddle clutch is the best way to eliminate slip completely ?

if so what do you folks recommend is the one to go for ? and what are they really like to drive on the road ?

Cheers, Bri.

I have a paddle clutch in mine and it never slips altough i'm running pretty low power tbh- plenty of feel with with it and easy once u get use to.
I find it fine in traffic but it is very heavy, spesh with a mk5 pedal which i find is great for adjustability

for around 200bhp the paddle clutch aint gonan be worth it IMO if you use it to drive around town in cause it will wear out in a year or so and nobody likes changing clutches all the time

i put a brand new LUK clutch in, i was told they were fine for 180bhp, but it slips really badly, especially 4th and 5th. it must be the pressure plate and not the friction plate that causes slip, is that right ? . so if thats right then the new LUK pressure plate i have will be no good with an ap 4 paddle ? flywheel is good.

i just want something that definitely wont slip

Up to 180BHP use a standard FORD clutch evrytime....you must re-face the flywheel every time you change any clutch in my opinion [for the sake of £25 its not worth the risk!!].

180BHP to 230-240BHP use an AP Organic imo [Thats what I use]

After this you'll need a paddle of some sort [don't really know which one as I've never used one].

You DEFFO don't need a paddle clutch at 150BHP It will wear out far faster than a conventional full plate clutch and be unnecessarily heavy.

lol, i realise that that kind of power is nowt, the car has a stage 2 turbo, -31 act, 4wd cossie cooler etc........it was going to get more power but has just never been done yet for one reason or another. i also realise a paddle might be ott, but after having the box out 3 times now in 3 weeks i just want something in once and for all what wont slip.

flywheel is good, the box started leaking oil from the inside, so i replaced the clutch yet again after cleaning the flywheel and all that with brake cleaner.

ap organic sounds like what i need then, thanks for the advice fellas

oh one more question, on the burton website it says
ESCORT MK3/4 MODELS WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT CLUTCH PEDAL 1029012 AND QUADRANT 1029013 TO ENSURE CORRECT FITMENT.
is that essential ?

Not ALWAYS essential but its deffo recommended....you'll end up doing it some point so its worth just biting the bullet and doing it all in one go - Parts are about £35.

If you an RSOC member yo can get a decent discound on the clutch from Burton Power, mine was about £235.

When you say the clutch is good what and how are you checking?

Perfectly flat/true surface and no burning/scoring?

The pedal mod isn't essential but you will never have to worry about a quadrant failing again, plus the pedal will be a little lighter because the quadrant is larger, aswell as giving higher release levels

jeez this gets more confusing,lol

so in a mk3/4 escort you change the actual clutch pedal and quadrant for a mk5 item...........anyone got any idea if this will fit straight into a mk2 xr2 with the original clutch cable ?

John, i had a look at the flywheel and got my mechanic mate to have a look, also checked the face as best i could with a steel rule, il have to get it skimmed this time to make sure though. the price i got for skimming was £50 + VAT

Cheers.

All depend where you are? What part of the contry are you in?

Local places to me will skim for between £25 - £40 all in if I remember rightly.

But that is Oooooooop North!!
