Default buying a car without the V5... what to do?

if you know the car's not nicked or nuffin and the current owner's just waiting to get the fookin thing back frm the DVLA...

what can you do?

obviously you can get a receipt for purchase of the car etc. etc. buy i'm thinkin about what would happen if the thing never turned up or summink, or if the guy lost it or something...

is it as dodgy as it sounds? could you leave yourself wide open to get fooked over if you dont take the V51Suppliment with you when you buy a car?

as far asi understand it, having the v5 gives you no legal ownership of the car, it just means youre responsible for it if you get caught speeding etc. this right yeah?

Do not buy a car without a V5!!!

End off story, look at the dvla website if you dont belive me.

A car is not legit without it!! Is it really worth taking the risk?

PMSL

The registered keeper is not nessicarily the legal owner etc etc....

Log book means nothing.

If (big if) you know the seller and know the car is legit buying without a V5 is no problem at all.

When it arrives he can forward it on to you or you can apply for one yourself (Ł19 charge now though I think)

bought a few cars without V5's and like I said if you know they are sound it's no prob, if not you taking a gamble

Your money your choice

From the dvla site

THE REGISTRATION DOCUMENT/CERTIFICATE (V5/V5C)

Never buy a vehicle without a registration document/certificate even if the seller says it has been sent to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for changes.

Hold the document up to the light - the DVLA watermark should be contained within the layers of paper; satisfy yourself that a fraudulent watermark has not been merely printed on to the surface of the paper.

Remember that the person recorded on the document may not be the legal owner; it is not a document of title.

Satisfy yourself that the person selling the vehicle has the right to do so.

I'm selling my XR2 on saturday.

Unfortunately, the lad who had the car before me only gave me the green slip as he had "sent off for changes". However, being a gripey fooker and not wanting to lash out Ł19 on a bit of paper which i wudnt have for long, i never got a logbook.

What can i give the guy I am selling it to apart from a Ł20 discount for the logbook, a receipt and a photocopy of my lisence???

My new log book only took about 5 days to come through.

I'd suggest if he hasn't received the new log book within 2 weeks i'd leave it well alone.

I have bought a car with no V5 before, as the previous owner had only just sent it off to register himself on the car (the car wasn't for sale when I bought it )

Just sent off the appropriate forms and hey-presto I had a log book!

P.S. If you really must have it with no V5, then:

1) HPi it
2) Double check everything
3) Get a comprehensive receipt from the seller saying it is his property to sell etc.
4) Make sure you have his home address
5) If he has sent off the V5 there should be parts of it that he should keep when it is sent off, make sure he has these! (I don't think you ever need to send off the entire document) - I used the previous keepers small slip off the bottom to tax mine as I didn't register the car for a good 4 months.
6) Get straight down to the post office and find the correct forms.

eh youve lost me

with my barclays account i can withdraw on cheques upto 1k...

i was on my overdraft limit (ie no available funds)

i put in a xxx thousand pound cheque... and withdrew 1k there and then over the counter...

how can i get any more then?

can i pay a 1k cheque from my account, to my account? would that work?

surely they'd see that its from my own account?

I think he means if you have Ł50 in the bank. Right a cheque to cash for Ł50 and go to the cashpoint and get Ł50 also...

V5 waste of time really, proves nowt, bought without b4.
What more interesting would be the reason he gives for not having one anyway.

I have tried to tax a vehicle i have been borrowing b4 and because it wernt in my name they wouldnt let me tax it , so infront of the woman in the post office i filled in another form, to change ownership of said vehicle and with that form gave me the right to tax it and what u know a week latter "I" was the keeper of that vehicle.

Other circumstances you can buy a car with V5 and it still have Hp on it, still be a ringer etc and have car taken off you, surely u seen the progs on telly, only way is the HPI check.

Another reason for this is because has he declared the car with all its modifications to dvla, thought in another of your posts someone on here did a check on it and it came back as a sierra saphire, if he aint u gonna have loads of grief youself getting all mods checked and engineers reports etc. THINK an hpi should tell engine Nos. which will tell u if it still registered as a 1.6 L

U say U know the car and him, but is this not the car u saw on ebay that u was asking other peeps about, so just what do you know about this car and guy sellin it.

In the last two weeks i received two new V5's one for H1 4ORD and one for my bike, apparently they are re issuing evry one with a new one (only told by a mate so not 100%, doubted at first because what a huge waste of time and money, but now i just received the second one well gotta beleive it )

OH and by the way just to cheer u up a bit more HPI dont always come back with correct info on it, my sis bought an ex police car and the first couple of years of its history was all crap, she traced its real history through someone she knows high up at Fords.

i was in the same senario about a month ago jim with an RS2000 no log book, reckon he sent it away to get put into his name.

he never forwarded it on so i reckon he'd lost it, but all you do if go to post office and get a form (cant remember which)

it sjust to request new log book and change names, it took about 6 weeks, then new log book through ya door.

Cant be arsed to read everyone elses comments cos I want to go home from work but........

If a person has sent off for a V5, this should only take about 7 days to come back to them anyway........... BUT they should still have the Green part of the V5 which is as good as having the Blue part.

Basically Jim, if he aint got the Blue or Green bit of the V5, wait till he has before handing over any money.

Also Jim, make sure that when you do eventually buy the car, that you re-register it in your name asap as he will almost certainly tell them he's sold the car to you...... and if you dont tell them you've bought it, they will fine you for not telling them.

Trust me, I deal with vehicle documents and the DVLA all day long. As far as the DVLA are concerned these days, you have to look after number one and cover your back from all angles else they'll fine ya for everything!

wait, so now if you buy a car you have to register it in your name yourself?

as oposed to that being done by the previous owner?

It is your responsibility to notify the DVLA that you are the new keeper of a vehicle.

And it is the previous keepers responsibility to notify them that they have sold it to you.

If the vehicle is not due for taxing and has not been declared SORN, this isnt so much of a problem, but if they are caused admin hassle by not being given the correct up to date information, they will fire off fines left right and centre.

Also remember, even if the previous keeper has declared SORN, if you then take possession of the vehicle but are also keeping off the road, you will have to also declare SORN asap........ or they will fine you!
