Default alloy rads

i am thinking about getting an alloy rad for my car but was just wondering how much difference does it actually make to the running temps? I am not happy with the temps at the moment hence considering an alloy rad. I am also fitting an oil cooler over the weekend which should help too. how many of you run over 230bhp with standard rads????

The thing that helped on temps on my car was to remove the upper beam of the front bumper. I have also removed the inside of the bumper and drilled big holes behind the number plate, which I remove when driving on the track. The temp quickly roose to the red before this on the track, now in 20+ degrees the temp only rise to just above the middle maximum.

Hi mate....

Very interesting....whats your spec? Boost and intercooler?

I've been having similar problems!

Gotta ask yourself why it's getting hot in the first place?

check:

Rad condition, even if the fins are good the inside might be fucked, re-con rads or new usually drop temps considerably

header tank cap, could be leaking air so not holding pressure.

maybe get a lower temp fan switch?

FMIC covering the rad, fan on the IC rather than inbetween the rad and IC?

lots of things you can do to help temps without an alloy rad, but if you've tried everything then it's the only option i guess

13-14 PSI boost, standard intercooler.

RSTs get hot because the front bumper is tighter than a nun's ass and the radiator is smaller than a normal Escort which produce less kw.

Ford wasn't thinking.

Default alloy rad

well i have a front mount cooler with 2 twin 8" spal fans running a standard rad which is in O.K condition, also i have my front bumper cut out. basically why i am concerned is:

I will be driving at average speed (50mph) and the needle will stay at half way, when i come to a stand still the needle creeps up just over the norm. If i stand still for a long time it will keep creeping up but wont ever go in the red, when i start driving again it takes a couple of minutes to drop back down to half way again which is fine. I THINK!!!????

However if i am at 50mph and cruising then i floor the car for a prolonged time the temps also start to creep up and then i always back off till she comes back to half way again.

It is becoming really enoying because summer is when you want to enjoy the car most but i find myself always looking at the temp gauge and worrying. Will the oil i use make a difference as i am using fully synth 5 40??

has anyone actually experienced high temps then put an alloy rad on, as i would like to know if it actually reduced enough to justify the cost of one.

I know why mine is getting hot....because of the bloody great FMIC blocking the Rad....

Mine is ok crusing and in traffic but under sustained abuse on track the temps just rocket!!

I have added an alloy rad and its made pretty much no difference whatsoever.

I'm gonna try cutting the front bumper and if that doesn't work I'm gonna swop the cooler for a later model GRS [mine is a very early one]

i guess there is no need for a alloy rad then, i am going to give that a miss. Instead i will have my oil cooler fitted and try a few little things and see how i get on. thanks for your replys chaps

i had major over heating issues lasy year, enought for me to give up on the car and park it up for the winter,
any way,

in the end, i changed, the header tank, cap, a hose, and strightned out a few fins, got a new standard fan, and fan swith, new thermostat, oil change, i also trimed the bumer slightly,

ant way, this summer, even running a increased amount of boost (peaking at 1.8bar)
im having absolutly no problems, the only time ive seen it got above half way was after holding it flat out for a few liles then pulling into a petrol station,

im also considering disconecting the water feed to the turbo to lower temps further,

Rallyesport,Does seem like your temps are a bit too high for just having some extra boost?

Default alloy rad

i am sure there is another reason, i was just wondering when a water pump needs replacing does it go fully or do they just not perform as well as they should??? I am thinking it could be the pump??

There is not enough airflow over the small rad to drive lap after lap.
