normally the ratchets go with a bang when you go to press the clutch and you'll hear the teeth clicking on the quadrant as the pedal comes back up. unless its fallen appart or something!

I'd say the cable has snapped myself, the quadrant has gone on my everyday car and its still driveable, although the pedal is very poor to use.

Is there any resistance in the pedal?

See if you can pull the cable inner out the liner from the engine bay side.......if its gone with a bang and the pedal has no resistance i'd bet you a jam tart its the cable
