This is a DivX file, so you will need the usual codecs to view it. If it doesn't play properly (video screen freezes) scroll back a bit (not RIGHT back to the beginning or it still won't play) and hopefully it'll sort itself out.
If, like Gav, you're useless and the vid is only playing sound, click on the following link to enable you to watch the video!
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...k_All_in_1.htm
Download that (takes no time at all) and it should play just fine.
I filled up then pulled over to remove the normal headlight and fit the camera light:

And a shot on the way home:

You'll notice I had the flip screen out and facing forwards to allow me to tweak the position. I must say I felt a bit posey standing in front of my car with the remote, watching my headlight to view all the footage I'd just taken

And back home again

The picture is extremely smooth, though the contrast seems a little out for some reason. The microphone perhaps needs covering a bit, as the volume of the chatter is a bit much it at times. My PC's encoding the large MPEG file as a DivX file as I type, so I'll upload it tomorrow along with a couple of pics. 46Mb file, about 5 minutes long. Oh, and there's some close-up sheep action for those of you who like that kind of thing!

Glad it's working now!
The camera's a Sony DCR-HC19E. I bought it just over a year ago in time to capture my freshly-completed Zetec Turbo conversion! Had it a year now and wanted to play with different shots. I have a mount that positions the camera just to the left of my head, which gives a good view of all clocks, the steering wheel and the road ahead. I wanted to try something different though, so modified this headlight to give the view I have now!

Hope that explains it!

I have a fixed mount that supports the camera to the left of my head, but haven't trusted exterior (sucker) mounts enough to use them with a Ł300 piece of electrotrickery. To a car programme, Ł300 isn't much to replace if the mount falls off and the camera's wrecked, but to me, Ł300 represents a lot of parts I could've bought for the car.
So, I wanted a better viewpoint to film from...but the camera's juuuust too tall to be mounted securely in one of the bumper light recesses in the bumper. As a result, I decided to go to the next-best option - the headlight.
Looking at it, I decided it would be easier to mount the camcorder inside a dismantled headlight, as opposed to making a mount that secured to the chassis, then mounting the camera to that. So, today, I picked up two headlights from the scrappy and some perspex (600mm x 300mm just in case!) with the aim of taking the glass out of the light, modifying it to take the camera, then making a perspex front to (a) protect the camera from stones and flies and (b) cut out the wind roar caused by wind blowing directly into the microphone.
Time for some pics!
I expected to have to smash the glass off the light, but some careful screwdriver tweaking saw it come off in one piece:

Checking to see how the light needed modifying to allow the camera to sit far enough back for the perspex not to come into contact with it, and to prevent having a vertical wall of perspex that would be noisy, and non-aerodynamic (pressing the perspex more than necessary, I wasn't concerned about slowing the car or increasing fuel consumption):

The back of the light carcass now sawn out to accommodate the battery pack, and allow the whole camera to be shunted back a couple of inches:

Sawing a perspex sheet to size (roughly), note the headlight moulding on the left protrudes a little, so to keep things simple, I cut the sheet shorter so it wouldn't interfere. The white colour is just from the two protective films:

A test-bend of an offcut. It's over five years since I worked with perspex, so I wanted to see how well it would bend using a heat gun and the vice as opposed to the correct tools. All went well

And the primary bend of the true lense:

A couple of tweaks to bring it into better contact with the top and bottom headlight edges so it can be fixed better:

And some shots of it back on the car (lense just taped in place for now, and camera bolted to the headlight shell):

The camera is very secure, though I'll use two small velcro squares to help even more. There may be quite a lot of vibration, and I'll need to tape over the open gaps at the sides of the lense, but I'll aim to take it out tomorrow for a test run. All the work in this thread took just over an hour, despite the number of photo's!
Not too big a job at all, and I think it'll look quite good!

Yep! I wanted it in the bumper light recess really, but it would've been hard to make it secure enough, so settled for the second-best position of the headlight. But yeah, it's a normal video camera, what did you think it was?
Fuck, what am i doing
Ignore my post above your last one!
Anyway yeah i know its a video cam but just thought it might have been one of these swanky cams specially made for slotting into small places, but that one is a normal one you'd use by hand, thats all i meant

You're just not very good at this are you Rich? What's it doing now? Any joy?
sidewayz - Cheers! I want better editing software now really, as I have two good car-mounted positions for the camera, I think with good audio and video effects and someone to take external footage I could make a pretty professional-looking movie of it in action. Guess I'd better get hunting!

GTi iTG - Music is needed occasionally, particularly when chatter, dump valve and turbo spooling sounds are all you hear non-stop for five minutes, it gets boring. I've made quite a few videos now (you might've seen my 8-minute feature from TOTB this year) and music's definitely needed to break up the longer videos. I hate music blocking out engine noise, but when it's used occasionally as low-level background music it maintains the viewer's interest
I can put music in already, but more sophisticated software allows the properties of the sound in the video to be played with more extensively. At the moment I can turn the sound up or down!
oh right yeah, abit of sound here and there is fine, but i just meant like 100% music and no engine sound is shit! normally if someone posts an in-car vid and i load it up and get blasted with some rubbish i just turn it striaght off
im sick of down loading shit to watch peoples videos cant peopel just plya them on real player or that other one ...i cant even see the thing all i can get is sound and no picture !!!!!!!!

GTi iTG - Same here buddy, it ruins a video when you can only see, and not hear what the car's doing.
iamrab - Stop whinging like a stupid baby
What about the noise? lol
Andy - Thanks, that's what it's all about, getting across the feel of speed. ALL my videos taken from inside, even at 140+ give no impression of the speed, so it's good to know the headlight cam displays that. Time to seek out one of the quicker roads and get it filmed! The roads in the video were mainly third and fourth gear ya see

I don't usually bother posting my vids on PF, as I tend to browse pics/vids and Restorations only, but it sounds like it might be worth it next time I make one
Thanks for all the comments everyone!

Porsche911r101 - It does seem to be that it only looks like it's nipping along at 80mph+, so that would make sense. As said, this was the first video with the camera in the headlight, and just a test. The light was fading, it's not a great road etc...I will be back with much better
