Default Try and diagnose this if you can!

Trying to get my S1 engined Escort up and running but I can't get it to stay running!

What happens.......

Starts from cold, but wont't idle, lots of revving needed to keep it running otherwise it cuts out.

Try and take it around the block, it cuts out.
This time it won't start..... leave it for a few minutes and it starts and for only a few seconds before cutting out....
(much more badly behaved when warmed up)

Also bear in mind it's all home built and wired and I haven't been able to get it reliably running yet.
Give me your best shot!

Could be near on anything.

Without any disrespect how confident are you that all the wiring work is spot on?

I'm not confident about any of it!

Initially when it first failed I took it out a drive and the turbo spooled up real nice, but then it backfired big time......... and would only run for a couple of seconds at a time afterwards......

Feel free to throw some ideas my way though as I'm needing some!
Anything to get the ball rolling cos I'm stumped!

Well, the time when it ran reasonably well and then backfired to a halt was a year ago!
I'm just getting back to work on it now....with no luck!

The car's got a new fuel pump fitted, but there's always the chance that it's not getting enough power?

Think I may try 'hot wiring' it....
