Default xr3i restoration (56k beware!)

heres my xr3i resto project upto now. 83k 3 owner and a history folder as big as a library.

stripping it out i was pleased to see no rot on the floorpan

the engine bay strip down

engine out for recon

engine comes back

bodyshell was taken to clasic car restorer to be stripped underneath back to original primer to check for any rot. then primed, seam sealed stone guarded and body coloured

the top half of the bodywork has now started and as planned its had new arches and a new o/s/f wing as this was a non ford wing and wasnt fitted very well anyway,

also pleased that there wasnt any rot around the tailgate mountings as this is another common area for these cars to rot

the car has had everything that can be bought from fords still. inc chromed top headlights etc etc all new glass rubbers mouldings etc etc so my garage, spare room and downstairs bathroom are full of car interior and other bits!!!!! and the missus is going mad . its been great fun taking it to bits, now i hope i can get it all back together! once the bodyshell is back and painted etc etc, all the suspension components and other bits will be powder coated. im hoping it will turn out as good as some of the cars in this forum.

the arches didint look that bad before they started cutting away, so beware slight bubbling may well mean completeley rotten arches. depends on how far you want to go, the wing had to be replaced as it wasnt a FORD one and had been replaced at sometime, and wasnt that neat of a job so it had to come off. apart from that there was one small bit of rot starting on the drivers seat mount.

the one thing i will say is that this car was dripping in waxoyl everywhere when i bought it, the underside had been covered in it, so its done its job very well! if your thinking of doing your S1................think about buying any panels and spares you need know. Ford no longer stock some MK4 panels so my inners were pattern ones so MK3's will be rare. Id love an S1, theyre a top car. look after yours mate the values are going to soar, exactly as RS2000's have

Very nice to see a XR3i being saved, top job indeed.
One thing,, are you gonna get all the red paint off the steering rack?

lol. the steering rack is an early 88 ratio rack, after sept 88 the ratio was changed, so i have one in my garage waiting to be refurbed and go onto when the car comes back. all the bits that have been sprayed red will be going for powdercoat anyway, so i told the bloke dont bother masking them up. as for the underside the paint is the final layer. could i have put something else on such as a lacquer? when the cars finished topside ist going to have the underside touched up again where the wheelarches have been welded in. thanks for the comments. i have to say ive been inspired and motivated by some of the motors on here and the XROC, so thanks

standard as it left the factory, apart from front recaros, and the ABS completely removed. It will be on the road when its finished. im not gonna rush it and spoil the work already done. my biggest problem now is storage. where am i gonna put all the new parts i have bought for it. the garage is full of boxes of parts and the engine , the spare room has the recaros, spare door cards (front and rear) and parcel shelves. the downstairs washroom is full to the roof with the original interior and fittings. so i think i need to borrow a TARDIS if anyone knows where to get them!!!!!!!!

a few more pics, been painting a few things whilst there off the car, tried having ago at the gearbox but not 100% happy with it. obviousley im going to paint the studs blue again etc. i have had it refurbed but asked them not to spray it black as recon boxes usually are, as i thought id have a go myself. may decide to get it stripped down and powder coated, not sure yet .

What iv,e found with spray cans is that the layers you put on are very thin With 2 pac paint 3 coats is more than enough, but with cans i find 6-7 coats is tough enuough. Also the item your painting must be taken into account.Paint a bracket that sits near the battery will only require 2-3 coats as it won,t see much action. The gearbox however will sit near the road and will get stones flicked at it.Laquer wise i use this.

The can in the middle.
