Default New Rally project... any ideas/donations?

We just bought a 91J xr2i for us to rally next year in the 1600cc special rally stages. We've already stripped most of it and put some harnesses in.....

Thats as far as we got so far although we've got the full extinguisher kit ready to be plumbed in [not much use without a cage first though] we've also got the time booked with a mate to skim the head and lighten and balance flywheel.

Bare in mind we're doing this on a budget of less than how much I spend on pies a week [which is quite a bit] so has anyone got any useful bits knocking around them they want a little bit of cash for?

Wish list:

Full Cage [must be FIA approved so willing to pay full whack]
2 x Buckets [FIA]
4 Branch manifold
Twin 40's
Kent/Piper Cam
any 170x70x13's? Preferably Colway Road Plus or similar?

If any traders want to sponsor with a few bits we can put stickers on

lancia delta - cheers mate, the guy I'm doing it has been rallying for a few years, but for obvious reasons it HAD to be a Ford...

Nuts RS - any specific magazines to look in? I found www.rallyusedparts.co.uk

errr the fun is driving in and getting to enjoy the car at real events rather than getting half way through the build and running out of time, money or enthusiasm....

Thats how I see it, but I do know some people enjoy building cars.

If you really want to build a rally car then go for it but be aware that it's not the cheapest way in to a rally car! I'd also be wary of getting tunnel vision as far as ford is concerned. The CVH is an OK engine but was never really developed much in terms of rallying. I hate to say it but a 1600 Vauxhall engine would be a better bet, vauxhall engines have been developed far more over the years as the Nova has always been a popular rally car. The nova would also work out cheaper to build than a Fiesta as the parts are readily available of the shelf and there's tons on the S/H market. If you want cheap rallying then go for something like a 205 cup car or something that isn't maybe as desireable such as a Sunbeam or Avenger, you can pick up a second hand Sunbeam or Avenger out of the Motorsport news for less than £2K a reasonable 205 cup car will cost around £3K. The other thing you have to consider is how easy it will be to get for spares as yo will break lots of things, particularly, TCA's, struts, springs, steering racks and no doubt there will at least be some panel beating/replacement panels!
Whatever you do all the best and keep us posted on what you doin!
Here's a couple of links that might help:

Fair point porkie, and you're quite right because I have the attention span of a

Anyway, Jay is the man in charge of the build and he's a mechanic by trade and has been rallying for a few years and built a couple of 205's, some Alfa thing YEARS ago, and a nova + loads of stupid yank tanks. He's been coming with me to the Ford meets and got the Ford bug, hence opting for the xr2i. He's great with a spanner but shite with a keyboard and social skills.
