I have all ways wanted to know why, when an rs turbo engine is running and you take the oil filler cap off it cuts the engine out i can not think why is happens
becuase the engine block and metering unit are 'all one' so taking the oil cap off allows un-metered air into the system, thus too much air to fuel ration, so it cuts out

Does this also not have something to do with the crankcase breather? or am I barking totally up the wrong tree?

The engine should die pretty much straight away.

Exactly. . they dont exist
Mine dies straight away!
Bear in mind it wotn die if you have an uprated breather!
Which then proves my point about vacuum sucking the flap down wrong?
Feck knows

mine didn't - because i junked the wank std breather setup and vented to atmos rather than back to metering unit!
voila, no more stalling when taking cap off (+ other benefits of course!!)

I think when he said uprated breather he meant no connected back into the air box
mine doesnt cut out and i have all standard breathers on mine
but i also have an oil leak at the rear crank seal, supposedly down to stuffed rings, could this possibly be due to some other problem then if my engine is not stalling when the cap is removed ?

If you have a leaking crank seal and on a standard breather i would expect your car to struggle to idle, not continue to run with the cap off. You may have blocked breathers, which could be building up pressure and making a worn seal leak, aswell as stopping it cutting out when the cap is taken off...........

Dan,Lookslike it
ballin, I did mean not vented back to the metering unit, I thought by putting a catch tank in, you didnt connect it to the metering unit.
safechav, thankyou, i did mean that

Strange
As said above the reason i know if it stalling, is because when the cap is removed that big hard plastic pipe that runs from the emission control filter to the air box allows a big air leak to enter the system after the flap which stops fuelling to the engine.
I did have an RS i got proper skanked on, that was standard, but that ran without the cap on (also blew the cap off the first time cos i went for a test run without the bonnet on and saw it fly off PMSL
) That car was fucked though, if i ragged it down the road you could follow the white trail of smoke to find me
