Default Buying advice on a Zetec S

hey lads

mate of mine just passed his test and is looking for a nippy 1.6 first car i thought of was a zetec s, i drove one around for a week and was seriously impressed by it scalped a few cars i never expected

Well anyway we've found one for sale at £2895 on a W plate, it has 2 owners and 70k miles, Imperial blue, fsh, sound body (well almost).

Did a hpi and it came up clean but the paint on rear 1/4 arch don't seem to match exactly , could be paranoia but seems pretty cheap for these.

what you think? cheers

I've got 1 mate and they are quite nippy, not as fast as 106 GTI or saxo VTS but the build quality of the fiesta is much better. They handle very well as standard and even better with a few choice mods.

thats about the going rate for one with that sort of mileage so doesnt sound bad for that, i have one and its only got 37k on the clock but would probs only get about 3250 for it if i was to sell it, they are really cheap to insure too.

if the one your buying is a phase 1 though check if you can whether the engine has been replaced. the reason i say this is the early ones had a problem with the liners and used shite loads of oil. in our one ford replaced with the later black top zetec under warrenty

yeah i had a problem with my phase 1 just after i got it the bottom end died but luckily i got it replaced under warrenty, think a lot of them have problems with the water pumps too, also look out for rust on rear arches and boot cause mine has had bubbling on them areas but ford are repairing that under warrenty too. like all cars they do have there problems but mine has been fine since it got repaired so cant really complain.

There are no liners

It's usually the oil controll ring that goes. Usually down to poor servicing and thraping from cold. I wouldnt worry about the longevity of the engine in the silvertop ones...after all the same engine was fitted to hundreds of thousands of Focuses and theres no myths about those

Also it's a very very tunable engine if you know what you're doing. Forget poxy induction kits and pouma manifolds, the standard induction manifold is good for 150bhp

the right cams, 4-2-1 and a remap should see very close to 150bhp

Its the same engine Only theres thousands more in focuses

Internet bullshit rumour mill

And to top it off everyone says the the blacktop is better ( phase two ) it only has slight differences to the cam followers and crankshaft end bearings, nothing to do with the oil controll rings thats cause the failures anyway

It's poor maintainence and abuse that kills them, nothing else
