oil coolers??
at what stage would an oil cooler be needed on my frst 1.6 cvh, is it only really nessesary for track use?
dose it depend on what power your running? boost? etc

i dont have an oil temp gauge yet
and i dont use the car on the track YET!
as it is now, ie on the road and many 1/4 miles runs, few top speed runs?
would it be required or no idea until i get an oil temp gauge?

it's never a bad thing to have one
piece of mind is good when thrashing your car,although 1/4 mile runs won't cause any trouble.

As said, you can only decide if you need one or not my monitoring your oil temps. You really should have an oil temp gauge by now Gav, that's very naughty. I found that using my ZT hard, and using engine braking and high revs entering corners to pull out of them well saw my oil temp rise too high, hence the fitting of my oil cooler. It's a 13 row full length Mocal, and has completely sorted my temps, no matter how hard I push it. Get/fit an oil temp gauge and see what your temps are like, then make a decision.

which gauges are good tho, lets say for around Ł100?
good job i got plenty of room now next to the rad to fill up with an oil cooler if/when its required

Precisely why I got off my ass and fitted mine before Brunters Steve! The oil temp's perfectly controlled by the thermoblock, just takes a bit longer to get it all up to temperature

And make sure it returns from the turbo to the sump at the right point
A thermoblock like the one I use is a must really. It allows a small amount of oil to bleed off to the cooler in normal running, and as the temperature climbs it opens more to maintain around 90 Celsius.

Mine got hot quickly after roughly 3 hard laps at donington without one. So I got a 19 row cooler with thermoblock and you can hammer it all day without any temerature issues.
