Default Smoke on full boost...

I have just bought a 1989 2wd sapphire cossie - i've had a 4x4 but always had a bit of a hankering of a 2wd. Anyway, I've found what I thought to be the best of all the ones i've looked at.

There is one problem with it, and that is on full boost there is a puff of smoke out the exhaust. It boosts fine - just one puff then its fine. Its the same everytime I floor it.

Any idea what it could be? I'd guess some sort of oil seal?

Its a stage 1 if that helps.....

would guess you have a slight seep from the oil seal on the turbo's impellar, the slight puff on boost will be whats on the shaft geeting blown out and then leak is too small to give a noticible smoke trail, then off boost it builds back up!

I would guess either warn turbo or seals going, should be ok to have it re-cond, wouldnt have a clue as to cost tho

I think i'll have to get this reconditioned as its smoking on boost all the time only a bit on low boost and quite a lot on full boost...and its getting through a hell of a lot of oil!

The exchange prices i've seen around £500 thats a bit much right now with everything else i'm doing to the old girl! Does anyone have a clue about costs for a rebuild?

It's ok if I drive it off boost, but its not exactly fun!

Cheers chaps

I might just do that! My old cossie smoked a bit but this takes the piss... Keeping the exhaust pipe shiny and back of the car clean is a losing battle at the mo....

If I keep driving it I assume it will get worse and worse?

cheers fella

do u mean the puff of black smoke that all turbo cars spit out as they boot off? its just overfueling, the ecu dumps a shit load of fuel just before all the boost gets in there, keeps it all safe

Nah this blue oil smoke - its drinking oil - a litre to about 150 miles. On full boost there is a trail of smoke behind the car. I reckon the turbo is dumping the oil into the exhaust...

Needs to be fixed as oil can cause detonation when in intake

Puff of black is ok on first boost usually happens on amed's and superchips as the man say's it keeps it all SAFE!!!!!!

Cos these chips are mapped for normal engine specs

Even when you change a turbo from standard the way the boost curve is can effect it thats why more people have there cars live mapped to suit there modifications.

Take the turbo to intercooler pipe off bet there is oil in it

Yeah i'll have a gander....

The RS specialist near me that I have always used said its ok to drive but stay off boost until its sorted.

I've been offered a T3 from someone off here, perfect working order - £155 might be worth it I think. Cheaper than a rebuild anyway...

or valve stem seals, these can be replaced with the head left on too, tail tail signs are smoke on 1st start up and wen engine has bn left off for some time giving the oil a chance to seap past the stem seals
