How would one go about fitting one to a car?[?]

As in the type you can buy for bikes

Fit a potentiometer to the sequential box, and use the pot to drive a circuit fitted to the display.

Martin @ MEF makes (or used to make) them

The ones that work from revs v's speed are not very accurate
