I ripped 19 albums (at 128k) onto a 1gb mem card, using about 950mb. At 112k I have 21 albums taking up about 730mb....
Apple claim their 60gb iPod is good for 15,000 somgs (based on 4min, 128k tracks)

64k?
And I thought 112k wasn't great sounding, that must be POO

Usually I don't rip at any less than 128k, but I decided to go down to 112 for my phones MP3 player cos the headphones are crap anyway...

this is just to be a second hard drive in order that i can transfer all music from me 160gb hd. I just thought that if i was doing that (theres only 8gb of music on it) that i could rip ALL my albums (244) to the 40gb drive from my "on shelf" collection

If you want to know the difference;
Smit has 3400 files taking up 15.6gb of space (rounded numbers) this works out to an average of 0.212mb (per track
I have 2000 files taking up 11.1gb of space (rounded numbers) this works out to an average of 0.175mb per track

Again, it depends on how many songs you want to fit on it. In theory you can put a million songs on a 40gb drive if the bit rate is low enough. Personally I wouldn't go any lower than 128k, and if you have half decent speakers connected to your PC, I wouldn't go less than 192k....
A typical album currently on my hard drive : 14 tracks, with an average song length of about 4 mins (some less, some more) currently taking up 83.6mb - call it 84mb for arguments sake.....
For simplicity's sake, you can multiply that 12 times and stay and take up a total space of 1008mb (remember there is 1024mb in a gb), so multiply 1008 by 40 and you have 40320mb, which is 39.375gb - I reckon you could add one more album in there to reach your 40gb capacity.
So you have 12x40+1 = 481 albums, all containing 14tacks (481x14=6734 tracks)

192k is best for you then, but you could get away with 128 (just you will lose a tad of bass from it)
Put it this way - do you have 481 CD's you want to burn onto the HDD? If you have 481 or less you should be fine

while were on the subject and to save me making a new thread...............
Why is that some songs i download (mp3 format) dont like being transfered to my mobile and they dont burn onto cd? it doesnt happen very often but its just strange that there normal mp3 and wont copy or anything and ive even right cliked on the file and went into properties and checked that the file isnt blocked/locked etc

Some files have licenses, and you cannot burn, convert or transfer them. I downloaded a track from a bands website a while back. It was one of these, if you bought the CD you qualified for this limited "free" download. So you whack the CD in the drive, go to the website and it verifies your CD, then gives you the pass code for the download. When the file came it played fine on my PC no probs. So I tried to burn it to a disc and it refused - it also refused to let me send it via bluetooth to both my phone and my other PC! I would'nt even let me brun it as a data file!
SO I tried to convert it to another file type and it wouldn't let me do that either
So I deleted it
I let me do that
