Default CV's and covering letters.

seeing as theres loads of rich bastids on here you must employ people etc. I want to redo my cv and apply for a job but i dunno where to start. id like to make the extra effort for it to be really good though (obviously il have to lie a lot )

so heres my questions....

Anyone know a good site, or place or whatever to do a proper cv, to employers whats the things that stand out in a cv, set out etc ?

what do you put in a covering letter? i know youre supposed to sell yourself but if you put loads in the letter youl have fook all to say at the interview.

And in an interview whenever ive been asked if i have any questions.......i can never think of a single one. i always pick something theyve just told me about and say well i was gonna ask you about such and such but youve just explained that to me

Does it matter if you lie about your gcse grades. ive honestly no idea what mine were but they probably werent as good as they could have been if id tried at school.

any help appreciated any pisstaking not appreciated

keep it simple

and maybe try and make it stand out, ie for a cv your posting use quality paper, rather than the cheap £3 a ream stuff

cheers for the replies, ive always stuck with jobs so its not something i do all the time which is why ive no idea.

I had planned on maybe looking for something like a light yellow heavy paper or thin card to get them done on and find a nice little plastic folder kinda thing to send them off in but dunno if thats ott

i agree with the gcse thing, ive worked with loads of university graduates that have no life skills and no common sense, basically as thick as a pit ponies cock (not all mind) i did get told that after 5 years they cant check back on your gcse results anyway as no one keeps a record (i left school 15 years ago)

cheers

Hi m8

A piece of good advice I was given was to slightly alter the layout of the CV from the usual.

Mine (which has a 100% success rate!) starts with my name at the top of the page, then has a box at the top that details five things that I am good at that is relevant to the job you are applying for. This shows that you are thinking about the job that you are applying for.

If you want, PM me your email address, and I will forward you mine (if you keep it to yourself!). You can then use it as a template!

PT, throughout my working life ive always kept my punctuality near perfect, ive had 2 or 3 days sick in 15 years, never let anyone down so now have excellent references to back it up which ive always though 'should' be a good thing in my favour.

JJ, il pm you my email mate, much appreciated (although going by your username name you wont hack the shit out of it will you ? )

Thanks for the help so far

Did this one a few weeks ago, got an inteview and got the job, hope it helps. It's by no means gospel but it's to the point.
Dear Sir/Madam,

From your company's advertisement I learned about your need for ********. I am very interested in this position, and believe that my education and employment background are appropriate for the position.

Presently, I am employed as a *********** in Aberdeen. I have a strong academic background in Mechanical Engineering, and think that I could apply my combination of knowledge and experience to your company.

Enclosed is a copy of my Curriculum Vitae, which more fully details my qualifications for the position.

I look forward to talking with you regarding this opportunity. I presently work on an “on-call” basis and therefore may be unavailable should you attempt to contact me. However, feel free to leave a message on my mobile or home telephone.
Thank you for your consideration.

i've just written 5 covering letters to go with my CV each different. i just went on google and typed in covering letters and there was a few good sites on there with examples, i think i used a bbc site and it really helped, everything was explained clearly to every last detail, format, presentation, content, everything! i hope that helps!
