Default Headlights (Not working)

Anyone got any ideas why my headlights wont work the side lights work but when i turn the headlights on they wont work??? When i put the main beam on the head lights come on???

What car? And without offence....have you checked to see if the bulbs are blown?

Mine did this the day of it's MOT, was just the bulbs

With the lights on pop the fuse box cover off and wiggle th etwo small brown relays two thirds of the way to th eback of the box.

Mine did this a few years ago and it turned out to be th econtacts in the fuse board. I poked a screwdriver down there to bend the contacts and it's been good as gold since and that's going back a good 5 years

I have just beene out there and they seem to be working

Will see what happens when it gets dark.

Yes i have checked the bulbs and that

First guess would be the plugs on the bulbs corroding and possibly the earth wires although unlikely to be the latter if full beam always works, or maybe even the stalk. But also worth trying what oranoco said.

Think as Oranoco has already said, i'd start with the relay's and work from there...

Right i have had a quick look tonight and its the relays gave them a wiggle and the lights came on so at the weekend i am goona adjust the pins in the fuse box

O well only a samll prob

Give the contacts a quick clean with a fibre pen or something similar, and put some electrical contact grease on

sounds like a similar problem im having with my rs 2000,can get headlights but no sidelights or tail lights!

Hate to say it but the fuse boxes on MK5's are all too common to breaking down, watch out for other things starting to intermittently play up.
