I am going to give the block on my new engine a lick of paint before i put it in the car. I am going to leave it black so what it the best type of paint to use? Also what is the best way to clean it up and prepare it so the paint sticks properly?
Cheers Spadge..

i would give it a good going over with some Gunk (orange tub) and a toothbrush, then primer using normal primer and paint using normal aerosol. Never had a problem with it coming off etc....

I used Car plan engine paint on mine and it seems OK finish to me. i also used White spirit, it's better than petrol as it dries out quicker and it doesn't leave an oily residue.
I used some 'high gloss' engine paint from a motor factors worked really came in aerosol form so was very easy to apply.. to clean the block i used a power washer
and them some white spirt to get the rest of the shit off!

We always just set the hot power washer to the hottest steam setting possible, and they always come out spotless and grease free. Then its primered and hit with 2 pak paint.
Have heard the engine stuff is suppost to be good though.
Think its made by hycote in Oldham

I used gunk but I missed bits and it started peeling. The bits I cleaned properly didn't peel and I used Halfords Primer, Halfords Radiant Red paint and Halfords clear Laquer.

I doubt a thin layer of paint on a block is going to make much difference to be honest mate!
Farnel sell a product called Jizer (we pronouce Gizzer of course) which is a great engine cleaner, it also had a rust protecting agent in it. This used with a steam cleaner seems to work very well. Then rub over it with some sand paper and primer with normal red oxide primer. Personally I think glossy finishes look a bit odd on engine blocks and I like the finish aluminium exhaust paint gives. That's how we do it barn tuning style round here anyway LOL

My mate (whos engine it is) wont even mask things himself, he just sprays till it runs and wipes the paint off where he doesn't want it!
