All the panels are different on a Mk4 including the doors so it'll never look 'right'. If you are insistent on doing it you'll need front and rear panels, wings and bonnet. It still won't look like a real S1 as the doors are different.............but then you'll need the kit, opening rear 1/4 windows, dash, trim.............
Be alot easier and cheaper to buy a S1 in the first place.............sorry, not what you wanted to hear but just being honest !!

The only thing i would argue on that is the bit about the doors, i'm 99.9% sure they are the same. For instance cabriolet doors, Ford sell the same door for MK3 & MK4, same with S1's and S2's.
But as said, its a lot of work, and changing a MK4 to a MK3 is a right slag of a job, and any value it had would be forfeited anyway. Find a tidy MK3 shell and convert it, thats the best way IMO.

Hmmmm, i saw that H plater on eBay actually, and i emailed and asked what the crack with it was and the guy gave me his word it was built from a brand new shell and registered as a 1990 H plate, couldn't see it myself though cos that would basically be a kit car and therefore be a Q plate would it not?

Not sure whether a new shell would represent 50% of the car which IIRC is what DVLA insist on - ie. at least 50% of the car built from brand new parts ?
I doubt it to be honest, the way the listing was banging every part on the car was brand new from Ford. Either way its not an original S1 anyway so its worth diddy squat, plus the fact its got a H plate on it which sticks out worse than a nun in a brothle.

All in all a pretty pointless venture i feel.

Part A quotes:
So effectively, he is correct, it should keep the H plate as he has used a new shell. however, it's not the SAME shell as the old one (now a Mk3 instead of a Mk4 shell) so then you have to look at Part B, in which it scores 9 points. 8 points needed to keep original plate, so again it is correct on that score. However, he's now made it look like an S1 instead of the original S2 that it was 'born' from, so I still look at it as a replica on a proper H plate.
**EDITED TO ADD I NEVER SAW THE POST ABOUT USING BRAND NEW PARTS. THIS HAS ALTERED THE EFFECT ON PART A (TWO OTHER MAJOR COMPONENTS) AND NOW MAKES IT A Q-PLATE IN MY EYES..OR SHOULD BE A Q.
Part A quotes:
In order to retain the original registration mark:
Cars and Car-Derived Vans must use:
The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or
A new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer/manufacturer (e.g. receipt)
And two other major components from the original vehicle - see list below
Suspension (front & back)
Axles (both)
Transmission
Steering Assembly
Engine
If a second-hand chassis/monocoque bodyshell is used, the vehicle must pass a ESVA/SVA test after which a "Q" prefix registration number will be allocated.

Thats interesting to know. I'm sure the way in which he put it though was a new shell was purchased, and it was built around that, the shell being a 90 spec.........so how can a series 1 engine qualify for any points, like the gearbox and so forth.....??? And even more to the point, if no such car existed before.....it can never qualify, if u get what i mean. Complete waste of time even though it was a very tidy motor (which u would expect)
Just one other thing aswell:
NB. Where there is evidence that two vehicles have been welded together to form one (i.e. 'Cut and Shut') a 'Q' mark will be allocated. ESVA/SVA/MSVA will be required.

I'm amazed to read that!!!! I wouldn't of thought anyone would endorse such things to be on the road no matter how many checks they do!!!

As opposed to being two cars cut between the front/rear seats all the way round...
