trackday weaknesses
Had the first trackday in the 3 door on Saturday at Bedford. Car was actually quite good fun and handled much better than I had expected.
Managed to boil the power steering fluid and lost it all when the pipe came off. Does anyone make a cooler for these?
Car was quite laggy with the T4, so much so that I was forced to change into 1st at a couple of the hairpins in order to get the turbo spinning. Going to get a remap soon but not sure what can be done about the lag - you really noticed it on track. Over taking a posche 996 turbo under power at 140 mph was quite nice though!
Car puffed a little smoke on every throttle back off then reapplication, I guess crank pressure? I have 2 breathers on the cam cover. Is it a case of "they all do that sir"? The car didn't use a noticable amount of oil.
Had some air get trapped in a tappet which gave me a worry. Once it had bled out though all was fine.
Does anyone else track a cossie?

There is a tube-type cooler as standard on the passenger side - replace it with a proper small mocal-type oil cooler. There are plenty of threads about this with photos of positioning of coolers.
A live map will certainly help get the turbo spinning quicker, but it's still a pretty big turbo so won't spin up like a T3.
Your oil smoke could be bore wear. How many miles has the bottom end done, and what oil were you using ?

I track my Merkur XR4ti over here in the states. Not the same engine (I have a 2.3 SOHC Turbo) so I can't help much with the engine issues. However, for a power steering cooler I got a nicer universal cooler and put it under the fender well.
Scroll to the bottom of this page for pics of the cooler: http://www.85xr.com/Steering_Rack.htm
Hope that helps!
