nah u don't wanna do that. you like little cars. soooo.... and i hate to say it.... if u really want a vauxhall, go for a nova, and drop a 2litre 16v in it. fcuk me, fun box on wheels believe me.
The engine is cracking.
Finding a good one isn't easy and they are a little more tail happy than the 8 valver due to the rear suspension geometry being slightly different to accomodate the rear disc brakes. Digital dashboard looks a little dated and tacky but also kinda retro cool at the same time. Rear arches rot out and wheel choice is critical due to the funny offset.
My bro had an 8 valver while we were rebuilding his FRST and it was in all fairness an ok little car.

yeh ive got a soft spot for the gte 16v , ive had 3 now , the handling is not as bad as people make out in fact i quite liked it plus you can hit the limiter in 5th all the time and still be reliable. I think rust is a major problem now , plus DIY mechanics working on them and not understanding them especially with electrics so find a good one with service history and at least some rear arches left
courtney sport do a lovely 5 spoke 16" wheel for them

The 2 most reliable cars i've ever owned were both 16v Astra GTE's....... thrash them to within an inch of their lives everyday and go on for ever
Just watch out for pourous heads

I had one for 2.5 years - bought it with 96000 miles on it and sold it with about 118000 on it. Saved parking my Cossie in the dodgy places I work in and a good runabout car
It was a G-reg 16v in Bordeaux red. The engine is without doubt one of the best hot hatch engines you can get. Originally designed to be a turbo set-up the exhaust valves are sodium cooled. They will take a lot of stick - only problems I had with mine was the idling. Burnt no oil and used no water. It was a Coscast head one ( if you lie underneath and look up at where the exh man bolts on to the head you should see a logo stamped between cylinders 2 and 3 I think - Coscast in an oval - these are the Cosworth plant cast heads - later ones were done in-house by Vauxto the same design ) The IACV needs cleaning out every so often -less often if you put a breather trap to stop oily fumes clogging up the roller valve in the IACV. I found the std brakes very good but if you put the 15" Cav Gsi alloys on you can bolt on ( ands it is a bolt on! ) 288mm discs and V6 Vectra calipers wich are excellent if you want to do track days - new parts for that are about £200.
They are more neutral handling than the 8 valve models as they run 2 ARBs at the back and more negative camber - also 10mm lower. I kept the std springs but as the dampers were shot I put on Koni adjustables and got a front strut brace. Improved the handling ( in conjunction with the 15" Cav Gsi alloys (ET49 offset important on the Astra) and Eagle F1 195/50s ) tremendously. At the same time my wife had a Saxo VTS and above 70 the Astra was MUCH quicker and could hold on to my friends hard driven 106 GTi in the bends ( although to be fair that was standard ).
I only sold it to get 4-doors as it was getting hard to lift my son in and out the back as the Astra is 3doors.
It is very torquey for a 16 valve and nothing like the Golf 16valve in engine character.
I miss it really and wish they had made the 16 valve XE engined Sri Cavaliers for a few more years so I could have got one of them as a replacement
If you want to know anything more let me know - If I'd had more space I'd have kept it as I think I had a good example and cars that are raw and fun to drive like that are few and far between these days.

BTW you can also tell if its a coscast head from the n/s of the engine, the water outlet on the end on a non coscast will be smooth, a coscast will have a larger edge to it.
