Default Fare Dodging (Trains) advice?

ok here's my story...

as i was walking to the station today i saw the train coming, so ran to the station to get the train, just maaking it. now i hadn't yet bought a ticket. (i get dailys) but i thought "nevermind, i'll get one at the [Fares to Pay]" kiosk at london bridge station (which i've done before twice in the past year with no problem)

now, i get there, Q up, and go to pay, and i get told they cannot give me a ticket, as the ticked office at MY station was open, so i've got to pay 25quid on the spot fine. I explained that 1) i didnt know this 2) i'd done it before without any problem and the (now cocky) bloke still insisted i pay a fine. I asked to see a supervisor, but was refused.

So, i refussed to pay the fine,on the spot, and asked to have it filled out properly etc. so took down my details and gave me a form etc. He also asked for the £3.20 single fare, which i gave him.

Now, should i contest this or should i just pay up?

as far as i'm aware i made a genuine mistake (ie didnt psychicly know that the fares to pay booth should only be used if ticket offices are closed) and was not fare dodging, i had every intention (and infact tried to...) pay my fare

what you recon i should do?

it's not so mucht he 25quid fine i'm worried about, mroe the principal of the thing.

ps i filled my my CORRECT details, i didn't use a made up name&address (which i probably should hve done... lol) however i did sign my signature wrong just incase i wanted to use the "it wasnt me" line

So he couldn't sell you a ticket, but when you refused to pay the fine he took the value of the ticket from you?

Did he give you a receipt for the "ticket" value?
Seems like you've paid for a ticket Without being challenged to show one, they cannot say you were trying to avoid the fare when you tried to buy a ticket.

Contest it.

lol, surely you could have just walked away from him and told him to shove it if he was being like that, or was there barriers? Screw them, the trains cost a bomb and are total crap, and you were trying to be honest. Sort of thing I would get proper on my high horse about tbh. lol.

long story short you will lose as if the ticket office at your station was open then u could have bought a ticket, the fact that you were late for your train is no ones problem but your own, fact is u travelled without paying in advance and that is a penalty fare offence m8

yes but is it really? i mean they put ticket sellers on trains and "fares to pay" booths at stations

also i have never seen anything explaining that thats not allowed. and there's certainly no signs telling me that as i get on a train.

http://www.setrains.co.uk/SETrains/C...engersCharter/

South Eastern Trains operates a Penalty Fares scheme. This is aimed at reducing the number of passengers who travel without tickets. You must buy a ticket (or a permit to travel, if ticket purchasing facilities are not available) to your destination and for the class of travel you want to use, before you start your journey. If you do not, you may have to pay a Penalty fare.

as if i've read their fucking charter, i can barely read a time-table

ok i guess i'll try and argue the toss by writing to them, but if they corner me into it i'll just pay up

OR i just say that its nothing to do with me and someone must have put down my details to try and get out of paying a fare, what you recon? there can't be that many people that actually put down their REAL name & address

Jim, how often are you up town chap - im guessing it costs you about 5 quid a day for the train - and when a week ticket is only 20 quid, or a monthly one only 70, won't it be easier to do that?

(i would never get more than a monthly one, as i wouldn't fancy losing a grand worth of train fares )

make sure you know what price the ticket costs, tell them youve lost it, they ask price to see if you get it right, you tell them, they believe you and let you go, job done.

not like ive ever done that or anything, officer.
