Its been years since i bought a decent stereo so aint really up to date on whats good and what all the wma ptd xxx tit symbles mean.

I am looking at spending about £300 ish so any help would be greatly appreciated

Decent Kenwood or Alpine NOT Pony Sony.

If budget allows Nakamachi or Becker. No frills but the absolute bollocks

 

If you want a quality stereo, exellent sound and exellent quality go for an Alpine

 

My Kenwood XXV-01D head unit is absolutetly fooking mint!! Sound quality is amazing once you get it set up properly.

I will admit that it is a little complicated to set up as it needs to know what size speakers and where they are positioned in the car and where you sit in the car amongst other things.
