If you're really stuck, stick another HD on, use any Win98-on startup disk with FDisk to prep with NTFS, then format with Windows. Drag across all the stuff you want to keep. You can also use the files and settings wizard to save your settings.
Then you could wipe and format the original with the same disk, and load Windows with XP disk. In setup, you will just see disk 1 and 2, and a drive letter.
