Just to clarify Martin's wastegate design, it was developed on Harvey's engine dyno (which may be where there is the confusion) BY Martin. The first design didn't work, and with the wastegate fully removed from the pipe, it still made 2 bar of boost. All Harvey said was that Martin would have to change the design to get the gas flow to travel down the pipe (as it was bypassing it). Martin went away, redesigned it all by himself, came back and it worked perfectly. I know this, as I was there. You have to remember, this was all a bit of a dark art at the time. Although Martin's wastegate postition will need to be heat protected, it works properly and can control the boost . The reason why Martin often comments on others that might not work, is because his first design (that didn't work) is exactly how many others have built theirs.
