Right, i watched a film about 18 years ago and want to watch it again so need name!

Basically it was a war film set in america (maybe black and white, not sure) about 3 mates that join up, before joining up they meet in a bar and are talking about old times etc and they put something into the lampshade above the bar (like a piece of paper i think) then all split up and go to war. Then years later meet up and get thing out of lampshade, the bars changed but the lights still there.

Any help boys? any big film fans?
