I had the same thing on a later festa which turned out to be the timing was out!
First thing i would change would be coolant temp sensor(cheap an easy to do)
Next i would try dropping the exhaust could possibly be blocked i have come across this before with similar symptons!then i would check the timing.i wouldnt think it s the fuel pump coz they usually just give up an you wont get any fuel up,these are just my sugestions from my expierinces but id always start with the cheeper options first!
