sounds like crank position sensor is failing - this is on the front of the timing case cover under the crank pully - check that it isnt caked in much and that the wiring isn't broken as it gets very brittle with age, clean the sensor head up as if there are any metallic bits on this, then it will sence them as its just a proximity sensor at the end of the day
