You are supposed to notify your Insurance company of any changes as and when they happen. If you tell them at Renewal time, they could hit you with a penalty to cover the period between the conviction and the renewal.
Never come across that and have worked in insurance for 5 years now!
I've also only ever declared at renewel time as well and NEVER had any problems (and I've had my fair share of points
).
