Definitely one to upset the purists, but I'm sure I remember "back in the day" you'd see the odd S1 with a S2 interior (dash, seats, door cards, rear shelf supports etc). Maybe they weren't all genuine S1's but perhaps modified mk3 Escort's...
And much as I love the S1 interior, I can't help but think that, on the whole, the S2 interior is better. The dash is better made, and IMO better shaped/looking; the clocks are better (I remember both of my S1's had "bouncy" rev and speedo needles); the door cards are better sculpted; the seats I remember you sat "in" more than sat "on" as the S1 seats; the rear shelf supports had space for speakers.
I can't help but think that the best RST, for me, would be a S1 with a S2 interior and an FRST engine - I'd be the scourge of the RST world
