The car has no battery on at the moment
if I detach the inertia switch in the boot (which is corroded) and supply a direct 12v feed to the connector that goes to the pump, should the pump run, or do I need to get the battery back on the vehicle?
No it won't as you don't have a circuit, given it has no battery.

You would have to connect the ground of your power source to a good earth point on the car body and then it should run. It's going to be easier to troubleshoot with a battery, unless you purely want the pump to run.
