I do have a solar powered one but the battery will still go flat if the car is not used for weeks at a time.I am with you on this as a drive out over not to long a distance will keep the battery charged and I am on my own, do not get out of the car or stop off anywhere so can't really see what harm I am doing.
A good solar should keep the battery ok as long as the battery is not connected to the car which would cause a drain. I've a cheap Chinese one hooked up to my old Volvo...and it could sit for several months without issue. Connect battery up, start car just fine. But if it's left connected to the battery, there's just too much drain in the car
