I'm not sure what kind of electronics would be required to run a Haldex system either, so that might add some complexity.

I'll certainly be interested to see what you choose, but I am way too lazy to do that much work
Im just gathering parts to turn a PFL mk2 Octavia VRS TFSI into 4wd, so delved into this quite a bit.

gen 1 and gen 2 haldex systems are reactive so they only function once slip is detected, not so great on track and can make the car snappy, you can buy controllers to help with this though.

gen 4 and current gen 5 is pro-active, so it’ll see your inputs and decide it needs to engage 4wd, like sitting at 4K rpm with the clutch down I guess 🤣 making it a much better system.

the oem way of controlling the haldex is through can-bus, it takes info from modules like the steering angle sensor, ecu and abs, I’ve mainly looked and gen 2 and 4 as I want to fit a Gen 4 in a Gen 2 platform, the older gen seem to take signals from the handbrake and certain wires from the abs, where as the Gen 4 primarily talks over can bus.

all is not lost though as you can get standalone haldex controllers, making life a lot easier, I’m not sure how much VAG stuff is needed or if there is better controllers out there as I’ve not looked into it too much as I’m hoping to make mine work using OEM gear.

only thing I don’t like about VAG haldex is it uses a PTO from the O/S driveshaft, so if that wheel is stopped from spinning so is the haldex system, it’d work much better with a front LSD installed, I’m guessing the new cars use EDL control for this reason.
