Monitoring turbo speed can be good for general health and well-being of the setup, and it can be used for boost control. So logging it can be useful.
Sensor is not £300. Not sure why some other kits are a lot more though.

But if you dont intend pushing the turbo to its limits, then no it is not necessary.....although without knowing speed...you'd never know where it's limits are lol.
