Some VW's have relatively poor thread engagement too.

I'd be wanting more than that though. Wheels staying on the car is pretty important

Although you arent racing...some drag racing rules specifiy you must be able to see the stud beyond the nut itself. Probably overkill in some cases, but makes for an easy visual that they're ok.
