So, to add in an extra cable take off (for some other 12v socket or accessory) it's a case of one end of the sleeve having the single cable and the other end of the sleeve having two bared cables inserted - the original cable and the new one?

Those Scotchlock connectors really that bad then? Just don't work or fall apart in use?
