I don't drive it very often in the rain either but it started tipping down on the way home from work last night.
The wipers generally seemed to be operating quite slow too. I'd say speed two was only a little quicker than the normal speed one you'd expect. Maybe the motor is knackered?
Try a new wiper motor, it sounds like yours is on the way out. I have had my Saff for 23 years and the wipers have never automatically gone back down to the correct position without some manual help. These days like you I dont use it in the rain if I can avoid it as semi-slick tyres, 450bhp and rear wheel drive dont really go together!!
