You can undo the rods from the rack and fit new ones to rule it out, just pull the gaiters back to reveal the bits to undo the rods.
It is best to check for play with the engine running that way you won't be confused
Get someone to feel the joint through the gaiter while you wiggle to find out if you have play in the inner rack joints
Focus,s do have trouble with knock from the rack when the PAS seals get worn and can feel quite sticky as it can't decide which way to give power assistance
