Default 4x4 Haldex system

Right guys, my parents are looking at getting a Skoda Yeti with a budget of 8-9k. I've been looking into them and from what I've found out they seem to be pretty good cars, and will be ideal for my parents as they intend to pull their caravan with it.
I've found a couple of 4x4 ones along with some 2WD ones. What's the Haldex system like and is it reliable? Am I right in saying it's basically a FWD set up that automatically sends drive to the rear wheels when needed? What can I look out for if we go and view a 4x4 one? Or would it be better to just steer clear all together and find a FWD one?
I think don't think my dad is too bothered about it being 4x4 but if the right car came along and it was a 4x4 would it be something that would put you off?
