My 330d has 8 speed auto with 750 rpm drop or less between gears, it would give most cars a good run for their money, the 205 gti is well documented as better in 1.6 than 1.9 and having owned both I agree, the difference, lower final drive. My 3.9 diff cossie with close ratio opppliger box is 100% better than my std ratio set up....I think mark Shead said that a 350bhp car on close ratio was quicker than any normal 500bhp car on the road.
I dunno about that last statement, that sounds a bit of an exaggeration....
