Manufacturing is so heavily automated now compared to a generation ago. If these factories were to return to England they would employee a small fraction of the workers compared to before they moved to Asia. Just go into Tescos/Sainsburys/ASDA and see how many scan-as-you shop and self-scan tills there are now compared to 5 years ago. How many fewer employees do you think they have due to this technology?

People need to understand this dream and idea that politicians promise of bringing british manufacturing back to England to solve unemployement and the welfare state will never. This is all part of the technological revolution.
That's true, automation has killed it for the factory workers. Ship building would be a good thing to return
