I've made my own alarm system for my electronics FYP this year for my Saff and indeed ANY vehicle.

It is run off of the car battery but the GPS and GSM modules have a backup battery in case the battery wires are cut by dirty rotten thieving crooks!
It is fully functioning at this stage as the FYP deadlines are finished as of this week although I am planning on adding more functionality to it such as remote start and remote shutoff (in case of a theft). There are legal implications regarding the latter as in the owner is responsible if the crooks have a sudden stop and cause an accident! Maybe not in the UK but in Ireland yes.
