I have a few golden rules when I hear this topic come up. Regardless of your choice:
- You must remember there is currently a fault in your system somewhere which may not be overcome by upgrading to EFi
- Always start with a known working ECU - Important!
- Be meticulous: Clean all of the loom contacts and check EVERY pin for continuity
- Check EVERY sensor and coil pack for the correct resistance across the pins
- Double check!
Too many people just buy off eBay, fit it and it doesn't work. I spent a considerable number of hours checking mine over and corrected a startling number of faulty cables, as a result it fired up first time after I remembered to fit the earth terminal.
Having said that, you're most of the way to standalone management at that money: a Gen8 boostmonkeys ECU will only be a few quid more.
I'd be temped to run through that list with my MFi setup before shelling out any more cash
