Default escort van 1.8 TD engine start up

Hi i have just picked up a 1997 ford escort 1.8 TD it has a badly corroded fuse box (i need one for it) But firstly I would like to start the engine without the fusebox in the car, i have gained access to the stop solenoid on the diesel pump under the PATS cover, It has 2 wires going to it. Am i right in assuming that if i run a live and earth from the battery to the solenoid and a start wire to the starter solenoid, that the engine will turn over and start up, I would like to get the motor running and make sure it is OK before i go to the expense of buying all the parts to get it road worthy.

Thanks

Tony
