On the rear you can only use spacers, due to the axle setup, but I don't think it affects handling, since the camber is fixed and the major handicap is always moving both wheels in relation to the car.

I have a capri 52" rear axle on my escort, and if I remember correctly, it is the same width with the sierra front end. I will confirm this tomorrow.
