Had a Mk3 Mondeo Ghia-X 2.5 V6 auto (5-speed) which is pretty close to a decent X-Type spec.

The car was absolutely lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed owning it - but

Horrific fuel consumption - 16-18mpg around town and 24-28mpg on a run hurt like hell after a while

The later tip-tronic 5-speed auto-box, despite being much better than the older Ford 4-speeder, really wasn't that nice to have or use I found

Probably of most concern to you - Despite having a full and comprehensive service history of regular oil changes I had to scrap the car before 80,000 miles when the oil pump packed up and the bottom end started knocking. 'Apparently' a common fault with the 2.5 V6 I found out afterwards (if only I'd known beforehand)

Yes it's a Mondeo underneath which had its positives and negatives depending how you look at it.
