Well it appears it was the battery.

voltage dropping off to 8.something when cranking.

Borrowed the battery off the wifes focus and it appears to be ok?

Never come across this issue before, clearly enough cranking amps but a lack power. Was a proper yuasa battery too approx 10 months old!
