The tyres will also slip before the clutch does (unless the clutch is really worn). It's in 5th gear where the clutch starts to slip first, as the resistance of the car to accelerate is highest there, so the load on the clutch is also highest. The highest load ever would be holding a constant speed, but at full throttle at peak torque.
