I did not pre heat !
How hot should you get it beforehand and how is best to heat? Hotplates are very expensive? Or basic oven?

you should have preheated it ,it will probably crack or have warped if it was structural i would bin it ,there is i lot more to welding than just sticking bits together lol,theres right settings ,rod ,shielding gas ,preheating ,prep etc its very easy to have a failure if you dont get it right mate ,on that housing you shouldn't have had to keep going over and over with weld
